On Saturday, five people died when a car fell into a canal by the River Niger in Kogi. The incident occurred on Friday at around 4:30 p.m. in the Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi. Mr. Pius Kolawale, the Chairman of Yagba West LGA, confirmed the incident and expressed sadness and regret. He also mentioned that out of the five people in the car, one person managed to survive with the help of a fisherman, but unfortunately, the fisherman drowned in the process.
Three women and two men, including the fisherman, were among the people who died.
They were traveling from Oga Community to Lokoja. Sadly, while they were near the canal, where there is a very sharp turn, they couldn't control the vehicle and ended up falling into the canal.
"Only one person in the car survived, but four others, including three women, died. One of the deceased was a kind fisherman who tried to save them but also lost his life in the process," he told NAN.
Kolawale explained that when the incident occurred on Friday at around 4:30 p.m., he called the Council's Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who arrived with his team and took the bodies to a morgue.
"Today, the family members of the deceased came and took their bodies for burial.
The road where the incident happened is actually meant for the maintenance of the dam by the Niger River Basin Authority. However, people traveling from Oga to Lokoja use it as a shortcut to cross over to Ebira and continue their journey to Lokoja," he said.
The chairman appealed to road users, especially drivers, to be cautious and avoid speeding while using that road.
The State FRSC Corps Commander, Stephen Dawulung, also confirmed the incident and described it as "very unfortunate."
Dawulung mentioned that although the road was not a regular one, people still used it because it provided a shorter route for travelers.
The FRSC sector commander urged motorists to always follow traffic rules and regulations to prevent the loss of lives and property.
He also mentioned that the accident could have been avoided if they hadn't been driving at a high speed on that particular day.
