Today, President Muhammadu Buhari will officially open the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals in Lagos. It is the biggest refinery in the world with a single production line. Prominent politicians, business leaders, and diplomats from Nigeria and other countries will be present at the event.

Here are 17 important facts about the Dangote Refinery:

1. The refinery is located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, and it covers a land area that is about seven times the size of Victoria Island.

2. It is the largest petroleum refinery in the world with a single production line, capable of processing 650,000 barrels of oil per day. Additionally, it has a Polypropylene Plant with a capacity of 900 KTPA.

3. The refinery includes a power plant with a capacity of 435 MW. This power plant alone can meet the total electricity needs of Ibadan DisCo, which serves five states including Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and Ekiti.

4. The Dangote Petroleum Refinery can fulfill 100% of Nigeria's demand for various refined products such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and aviation fuel. It can even produce extra amounts of these products for export.

5. The refinery is designed to primarily process Nigerian crude oil, but it can also handle other types of crude oil if needed.

6. The refinery has its own marine facility, which allows for efficient transportation. It has the largest single order of five Single Point Mooring (SPM) systems in the world.

7. It is built to process a wide range of crude oils, including those from African countries, some Middle Eastern countries, and even light tight oil from the United States.

8. To protect against potential sea level rise due to global warming, approximately 65 million cubic meters of sand were dredged using some of the world's largest dredgers. This elevated the height of the refinery area by 1.5 meters.

9. To enhance the capacity for equipment installation, the project acquired 332 cranes since the current capacity in Nigeria is insufficient.


10. The project established the biggest granite quarry in the world, which produces 10 million tonnes of various materials such as coarse aggregate, stone column material, stone base, stone dust, and breakwater material every year.

11. A port was developed, and two quays were constructed with a load-bearing capacity of 25 tonnes per square meter. This allows for the direct transportation of large and heavy cargoes to the refinery site.

12. Additional quays were built at the port to handle large vessels for exporting fertilizers, petrochemicals, and liquid cargoes. The port now has a total of six quays, including one for Roll-on/Roll-off operations.

13. During the construction, around 700 piles were drilled each day, resulting in a total of 250,000 piles.

14. The refinery has 177 tanks with a combined capacity of 4.742 billion liters.

15. The refinery can load a total of 2,900 tankers, considering each tanker has a capacity of 33,000 liters.

16. On-site temporary housing units are available, which can accommodate up to 33,000 people.

17. The Dangote Refinery is a significant project that is expected to generate a yearly income of $21 billion for Nigeria.
